30 random acts of kindness in 30 days

for the month of ramadan and in honor of my beautiful mother, i have decided to perform one random act of kindness a day and journal it.

ramadan is a lunar month on the islamic calendar where muslims fast from sunrise to sunset.  it is meant to be a time of mental, physical, and spiritual renewal.  during the fasting hours we do not eat or drink – not even water.  individuals are also encouraged to refrain from any negative activities such as gossiping, using swear words, fighting, letting anger overcome one, etc.  reflecting, praying, giving to the poor, helping the needy, and a general focus on self-improvement, community building, and spiritual upliftment are encouraged.

this project was inspired by my college roommate, versha, who recently recalled my sporadic bursts of random acts of kindness.  i then realized that i hadn’t had an episode in a while – and i couldn’t think of a better time than right now.

there is a section on the site called “101 random acts of kindness” – i encourage you to use it and ask others to pay it forward as well.  if you have any additions to the list, feel free to submit them here: loveistheword.org@gmail.com.

we, as people, as society, spend a lot of time dwelling on the negative, getting stuck on the past, worrying about the future.  it is commonplace and accepted as a social norm to gossip, complain, and be down on ourselves.  the news and media don’t seem to help much either.

that said, how much time do we spend sitting around in groups praising our peers, or showing gratitude and being content in what is?  how often do we give ourselves credit for who we have already become and the trials that we’ve endured?  i challenge all of us to elevate each other by practicing living in the beauty of this exact moment: in awe of life as it is.

this site is my small attempt at an exercise: to spread love, kindness, and positivity.  over time, i hope to launch various projects aimed around this theme at loveistheword.org.  my original idea was in fact not the 30 random acts project, but another one around expressing love in a more personal manner.  i hope to share that project in the coming months.

i hope you enjoy my recollection of experiences and that you’ll leave here inspired…or simply smiling :)

Okay, this is going to sound crazy, but I actually came across this blog during last Ramadan, before I’d met you. I can’t remember who linked to it, but I thought this was the coolest thing ever.

And now that I found it again, I JUST realized that you’re THE Seher behind this blog! Which is kind of blowing my mind because what a small world, you know? Anyway, this makes you even more awesome. :D
